Memory and Response Drawings

Memory Drawing

Title: Gone
24"x18"
Charcoal
Artist Statement: This piece ended up being very personal to me considering my family circumstances. I lived in the same home my whole life so it was a nice exercise to blindly draw my childhood home. When going back into the piece, I could see some letters in my drawing. I cut out and spelt the word gone since in the past year, everyone but my dad has left my childhood home. I've been away for years but my mom and brother left so the three cut outs represent us.

Response Drawing

Title: Mason Box
12"x9.5"x4.5"
Tracing Paper, India Ink, Tape, Charcoal, Cardstock
Artist Statement: This piece I felt I needed to do a 3D drawing since this story spoke of so many objects. I fabricated the letters and box and put vine charcoal around it so it leaves a mark just as the house left a mark on the character in the story.

Drawing Collection

Research

Title: Untitled
Size: 5'x4'
Medium: Tracing paper, Sketchbook Paper, Canvas, Banana Leaves, Cardboard, Sandpaper, Tape, Foam, Ink, Hibiscus Tea, Chicken Wire, India Ink, Charcoal, Pastel, Soy Sauce, Copper Wire, Wax, Acrylic Paint, Plastic, Packaging Tape.
Artist Statement: I really enjoy working with different odd materials and this piece really gave me the freedom to explore materials. I wanted each piece to be crafted and have tiny details such as pieces of cardboard being attached with pieces of wire and the copper wire. The tea made natural marks and I tried to make the other marks as gestural and natural.

In Class Exercise

"Tropics"
paper, pen, pencil, and color pencil
10.5x11
Artist Statement: This piece has pops of color or all over color to highlight different parts of the drawings. The colored pencil keeps it simple but added value and interesting details.

"Dark Spaces"
paper, pen, and charcoal
20x18
Artist Statement: Since most of the drawings were skeletons, the charcoal was rendered to make dark, creepy spaces for the skeletons to dance around. I added the linear lines to connect to the contour drawings and add depth to the charcoal.

Transformation 5

Title: Beyond the Shadows
42"x36"
Artist Statement:
This was probably one of my favorite projects all semester. I loved having to work big and change almost everything each time. It let me explore materials and really work into and spend time on a surface. Sometimes the transformation took hours, sometimes to took 10 minutes but what I focused on was having a quick response to what was in front of me. The majority of process in these pieces is making large decisions to layer and grow the piece. It was so relaxing just having a conversation of sorts with the piece as I applied materials to the piece.

White Paper Drawings

Top:
Title: Reach
10"x8"
Paper and gesso
Bottom:
Title: Sticky Fingers
8"x10"
Paper and gesso
 Artist Statement:
This exercise showed my sculptural tendencies since all I did with the flat paper was build. I enjoyed this exercise since it limited my materials and forced me to try different techniques.

These pieces were a good exercise and I went between doing abstract and pieces depicting something natural. The two abstract pieces slightly allude to natural things to tie together with the other two pieces.

3 Artists

A few artists I've been looking at lately are James Swain, Chris Neuenschwander, and Gemma O' Brien. James Swain and Chris Neuenschwander are both relief printmakers while Gemma O' Brien is a typographer. Since being in relief printmaking this semester, I've really come to love the art of it and have been coming across artists who's technique and style I can learn from. Chris is from my hometown of Atlanta so I definitely want to try to see his work next time I'm home. Gemma I found through browsing one of Volcom's pages and she had a tutorial with a hand lettering technique and I've been following her work since. I love how James Swian puts different images into the overall images which I find unique.
